The day has arrived! You got the job, and you are reading to start earning money and freedom by teaching English Online with Palfish! But what should you do in your first 24 hours as an Official Palfish Kids Course Teacher? Let's find out!
Your First Day With Palfish!
FIRST, YOUR SCHEDULE!
The first first FIRST thing you must do when you become a Palfish Official Kids Course Teacher is check your schedule. Any time slots that you put as available when you applied for the job will AUTOMATICALLY be opened after you pass your interview, and you can get a class booked at any time and you want to show up and not miss out!
Palfish will promote and support you during your first couple of weeks as a new teacher. You will likely get 1 or more classes booked within the first 24 hours. So you really need to make sure the slots that are open on your schedule are times you are DEFINITELY available. How do we find the schedule? Click the 'Appointments' button on your home page!
Then if you click the 'Schedule' tab along the top of the page, you will see your schedule! The times highlighted in green are the time slots that are now open to classes. So go ahead and check that all the times and dates you have open are correct for you, and that you will be available to teach at this time if you get a class booked for it. Great!
If you want to receive the most bookings, I would definitely recommend that you open Weekly time slots. This shows the parents that you are a reliable teacher, and that they can have a consistent learning experience with you. (Obviously holidays ARE allowed, but in general, you want to be there every week for them!) This also shows the Palfish Team that you are committed to this job and can provide regular time slots for their customers, so they can then help you to get more bookings and send more classes your way.
If you would like more information about scheduling, you can read my other post Palfish Scheduling 101!
UPLOAD AWESOME PROFILE PICTURES
The first thing a parent or student will see is your PROFILE PICTURE so we need to make sure that it is as fun, and inviting as possible!
The best kind of picture is a bright and friendly picture, of you in your classroom, smiling! We want to make sure we use a high quality picture too so we look professional too (well, as professional as you can look wearing a pom pom headband and surrounded by cuddly toys!).
It's a good idea to also add more pictures to your profile to give parents and students a little bit of an overview of who you are as a person and a teacher! To do this, go to the Palfish homepage> tap your profle picture (it should say photos at the bottom of your picture, as shown in the picture here)> and then click the plus sign to add additonal photos!
These will show up at the top of your profile when people view it! Try to make even your lifestyle photos kid friendly, perhaps some photos of you on holiday, a wedding photo if you're married, or you with your adorable pet dog/cat/hamster/dragon! And of course, lots of photos of you in your classroom!
UPLOAD A FUN INTRO VIDEO
This is another super important thing to do within your first 24 hours as a Palfish teacher!
When you first get hired by Palfish, during the first week or so they will help you out by sending trials your way, and more importantly, they will kindly feature you on the 'Recommended Teachers' section of the Palfish Kids App, so you will get seen by lots of potential students! This means we need to make sure we have a fabulous introductory video for students/parents to watch when they click on our profile, as during this time your profile is going to be getting A LOT of views!
So, let's make our self-intro video very fun, full of energy, colourful, bright and natural! Make it warm and inviting to students, and show case your classroom and personality!
The best video length is around 1-2 minutes, keep it simple and try not to use too many words! Introduce yourself, where you are from, your teaching experience, what kind of teacher you are, and welcome them to come and learn with you! Perfect!
WRITE A GREAT BIO
This step is fairly self explanatory, but make sure you have a cracking bio for the students and parents to read! It should be fun, interesting to look at, sprinkled with emojis, and give them all the information they need to choose you as their teacher!
This should definitely include your name, age (if you wish), country of origin, teaching experience, qualifications related to teaching, hobbies, and teaching style! If you are a language learner yourself, you could even write what languages you have learnt!
(I did post a sample bio for reference in my How To Apply blog post, if you'd like some idea of what to put, feel free to check it out here!)
Try not to make your bio too long as it probably won't get read if its a 3 page essay! Another helpful tip, if you don't speak Chinese, it's probably a good idea not to have Chinese in your bio... unless you can get someone who CAN speak Chinese well to write it for you! I've seen quite a few people who've used google translate to translate their bio's and I can tell you it's not very accurate... Example, instead of saying 'I love going out to eat food with my family!' in Chinese, one teachers bio actually said: 'I love eating my family!' not what you want in your profile when you're teaching kids.. ;)
ANYWAY, a good bio is a must for attracting potential students, and making your profile stand out!
A CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE AUDIO INTRO
As part of your profile, you are also required to record an audio intro! Make sure that it is clear and easy to understand! Try and speak slowly! You could read out your profile, or say something completely different, but whatever you do make sure it's good quality!
And now, the fun part! Get marketing yourself! There are so many ways we can market ourselves such as:
Using the Reading App!
Reading App Groups
You can learn more about how to increase bookings using marketing in my next blog: How To Increase Your Bookings!
The more engaged you are with the Palfish community, the more students and bookings you will see!
COMPLETE THE LESSON PREPERATIONS
Another vital task for your first couple of days is to complete the NEW Palfish lesson preparations. These are a requirement for all NEW teachers now, and you will need to complete each of these before you can start receiving trials, so it's best to do them ASAP!
There are 7 Lesson Preparations in total:
For each lesson preparation, you will need to watch all the training videos provided, and then practice teaching the trial slides, which will be recorded and graded by an AI. You must score 80 points or more out of 100 to pass each lesson preparation, but you may re-take it multiple times even if you don't pass the first time! For more information on how to PASS the lesson preparations, check out this blog post!
Although it may seem a lot at first, these lesson preparations are so useful and help you to get familiar with ALL the possible Palfish trials, so that you feel confident, and ready for those first classes when they arrive!
And these are my top tips for what to do straight after you pass your interview! Are you still feeling a little nervous for your first class? No problem! Check out my next post, Preparing For Your First Class With Palfish!
